The Art of Love
What is the connection between love and poetry? There appears to be a consistent notion that romantic or erotic feeling is best communicated through verse. Yet what is it about poetry that makes it an especially apt medium for expressing, describing, or representing feelings of love? In this talk Gray will discuss some of his recent research into the history of Western love poetry, as well as different philosophies of love, to try to explain the nature of the connection.

Erik Gray is considerered one of the leading authorities on poetry at Columbia University, is quite famously beloved by students and has even had his courses featured among Columbia publication Bwog's listing of "Classes to Take Before You Graduate" He has written books and articles on nineteenth century British poets such as John Milton, William Wordsworth, John Keats, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and Alfred Tennyson. He is currently writing a book about Western love poetry.
